Frederic Gilbert

Frederic Gilbert is an Associate Professor of Ethics at the University of Tasmania, Australia. His current research focuses on exploring the ethics of novel implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) operated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Frederic’s work deeply engages with users' experiences, making him a pioneer in certain aspects of human-computer interactions. He investigates the phenomenology and subjective experience of being implanted with a BCI.

 

In particular, his research addresses and examines the effects of BCI on an agent's sense of control, autonomy, agency, and self, especially while being treated for neurological and psychiatric conditions such as dementia, severe depression, Parkinson's, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Additionally, his work studies the claims, rhetoric, and narratives presented in media and academia to convey findings and advocate for regulations at various levels
